A Dune On Long Beach Island, NJ - Without Dune
Grass To Protect It From The LBI Storms

Above is a picture of a LBI Dune near Lorry's Motel on Long Beach Island, NJ before planting dune grass. As you can see, the middle of the dune doesn't have dune grass to keep the sand from being eroded by the wind or washed away.

Eventually this dune will possibly be blown away or collapse and the ocean will threaten homes, businesses, and possibly people's lives - unless LBI dune grass is planted.

Volunteers below from Girl Scout Troop # 341 from Hopatcong, NJ
are planting dune grass to protect the dunes and help preserve Long Beach Island, NJ beaches. Pictures of the owner of Lorry's Island End Motel and some LBI volunteers are seen as they replaced the dune grass and posted new signs for keeping off the dunes to protect them.

Get Involved - It Is Easy And Fun To Plant Dune Grass To Protect Our LBI Beaches.

If you or your group would like to volunteer
for the annual "LBI Dune Grass Planting Fun Day At The Beach" every October, please call Bill Hutson at 609-492-6363 or e-mail Lorrys@LorrysMotel.com.

After planting the LBI dune grass, Lorry's Island End Motel provides A Free BBQ At 3:30 PM For All The Volunteers And A Raffle For 3 Free Lorry's T-Shirts.

                       Keep Off The LBI Dunes

It Is Very Important For Everyone To Keep Off The LBI Dunes. Many people don't realize the importance of the dunes. The Dunes are not just sand hills to play on! They are God's way of protecting Long Beach Island from the relentless forces of very rough weather.

The dunes are the first line of defense to protect everyone against storms. Walking on the dunes breaks down the dune grass and kills the dune grass - making it easier for the sand to blow & wash away. Our LBI volunteers plant dune grass and other vegetation to enhance and fortify this fragile eco-system.

We Hope You Will Help Us By Staying Off The LBI Dune Area.

Don't Walk, Play, Nap, Dig, Frisbee, Or Touch The Dunes For Any Reason. The dunes are so important to our survival that we insist you stay off the dunes. Long Beach Island will issue a summons if necessary with a Mandatory Court Appearance. Fines and Community Service May Result.

  Who
Planted Long Beach Island, NJ Dune Grass

History Of Previous LBI Dune Grass Planting

* 2010 was the 5th year and we had 150 volunteers who planted 10,600 pieces of dune grass

* 2009 we originally had over 100 LBI dune grass volunteers for our 4th year. However, very bad weather made us postpone the Oct 17th date to Oct. 24th. Again, very bad weather made us postpone the Oct. 24th date to Oct. 31st. Yes on Oct. 31st we did plant dune grass after
2 postponements, but with a lot fewer volunteers.

But thankfully we did plant dune grass as 2 weeks later we got hit with 3 days of very bad storms (worst since 1996). It looks like almost all of the dune grass we planted survived the storms. However, about a mile away from Lorry's Motel, a beach without dunes and dune grass to protect it from erosion almost went into the ocean (see picture at the top of this page).

* 2008 there were 54 volunteers to plant LBI dune grass for the 3rd year.

* 2007 we had 14 volunteers to plant dune grass the 2nd year.

* 2006 there were only 5 volunteers for the 1st year to plant dune grass.

After planting the dune grass, Lorry's Island End Motel provides A Free BBQ At 3 PM For All The Volunteers And A Raffle For 3 Free Lorry's T-Shirts.
